A Lesson on the Importance of Digital Consent and Guidelines…
I have always known that teachers are not allowed to put pictures of their students on the internet without proper permission. For most people, I would hope that’s common sense. I was also somewhat aware of the guidelines that teachers had to follow when it comes to social media. When I was in both grade six and seven, I had my absolute favourite teacher ever that our class became quite close with. Every time anyone of my classmates would ask if we could follow her on facebook or instagram, she obviously said no. At the time we didn’t really understand what the big deal was, but as I got older it began to make more sense. It was great to hear Jesse elaborate on the seriousness of being a teacher with social media. Students should never follow your personal accounts and a teacher should never follow a students, even in a harmless manner. It’s merely inappropriate, plain and simple.
One topic I was surprised about was the consent that is required when it comes to younger students using the internet. Because most online websites that you have to sign-up for, or provide personal information to use shares that data nationally, not all parents are comfortable with their child using them and have the right to say no! As teachers, we must provide alternative methods for lessons that would usually require this kind of digital footprint!
Do Technology and Digital Media Still Belong in the Classroom?
The answer is yes! Despite all the guidelines and permissions it takes to bring digital media into the classroom, this is our modern era and it’s important to get these children accustomed to a technological/ digital lifestyle as early as possible! It was awesome to see how passionate Jesse Miller was for the positive side of digital classrooms, all while still expressing the implications and negative aspects so explicitly! It was an honour to hear Jesse speak and I’m excited to see what our future guests will bring to the table! Thank you Jesse Miller (@MediatedReality on twitter)!
